Celestial Spirits (星霊 Seirei) ,are magical beings from their own separate universe, the Celestial Spirit World. Mages, called Celestial Spirit mages, are able to summon spirits by opening their gates through the use of Keys.

All Celestial Spirits are named after a different astronomical constellation.

Contracts and Rules

All Celestial Mages must make contracts with Spirits...

When a Celestial Spirit Mage receives a Key and opens its Celestial Gate for the first time, they have to set up a contract with the respective spirit. This contract consists of asking the spirit which days it can be summoned by the Mage. This simple agreement, much to the shock of Natsu and Happy, forms a dedicated, serious bond between the Spirit and summoner. However, under certain circumstances, i.e. during battle, a contract can be asked to be completed later.

Contracts can be broken if the Mage gets arrested, releases the spirit by him/her self, or dies. When a Celestial Spirit Mage summons a spirit, it appears directly next to them, as that's where the gates to the Spirit world had been opened. It's impossible to summon spirits elsewhere. The spirits must also abide by certain rules enforced by the Celestial Spirit King. The only rule that has been introduced in Fairy Tail so far is that a spirit may not directly or indirectly kill its summoner under any circumstances.

...The contract can be broken when the summoner dies.

When the gates are closed, it is required from both the summoner and the spirit to agree upon the gate's closure. However, spirits can also be "forced closed" in battle, which means they can be forced back into the Celestial World by the summoner's will, though not every Celestial Spirit Mage is capable of doing that.

Celestial Spirits also have different categories of sorts, that fall under the basic summoning conditions from their owner. For example, Loke summons himself most of the time without Lucy doing so herself, Virgo also has summoned herself once, as have Gemini and Horologium and if trust between the Celestial Spirit and the Owner is not an issue, contracts can be temporarily dissolved. It also seems that if the Celestial Spirit is strong enough, they can use their own Magic to stay in the Human World, when/if the contract is not in action. The strength of the Celestial Spirits is affected by the Magical strength of their summoner as Lucy once said that her spirits could become even stronger than Natsu if she trained more.

Types of Keys

• Gold Keys: Gold Keys are one of a kind; being able to summon the strongest Zodiac Celestial Spirits.
• Silver Keys: Silver Keys can be bought anywhere, and are noted to be rather inferior to gold.
• Crystal Keys: One of the most valuable types of keys. While they are not as powerful as Gold Keys, but they are stronger than silver keys, crystal keys still aren't that easy to find, but a little easier than Gold Keys. It is said that like Gold Keys, Crystal Keys are one of a kind, but they are larger in quantity. In several cases, Crystal Keys are noted to surpass the power of Gold Key spirits on occasion.
• Red Keys: A red key celestial spirit is a spirit who has been banished from the celestial spirit world for any number of reasons, they are noted to be extremely powerful, rivalling gold.
• Lost Keys: Lost keys are very rare. They are black in color. Lost keys are Celestial Spirits that either have been forgotten or replaced.
• Platinum Keys:This Keys envelope the power of the chines zodiac.They are as rare as the gold Keys but they are more focus in terrain and area effect combat

Capricorn	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Layla Heartfilia| (former), Zoldeo (former) "The Goat" is a humanoid goat who was taken over by his former master through the use of Lost Magic. When he is freed, he joins Lucy as one of her spirits.
Aquarius	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Layla Heartfilia (formerly), Ahatake Kurosaki (formerly) "The Water Bearer" Aquarius is a mermaid carrying a jug of water. Lucy considers Aquarius her strongest spirit, even after she got Loke's key.
Pisces	Summoner: Yukino Aguria "The Paired Fish" Pisces consists of a pair of enormous fish, one black and one white.
Aries	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Angel (formerly), Karen Lilica (formerly), Ahatake Kurosaki (formerly) "The Ram" Aries is a timid female. She has horns at the top of her head much like a ram. She has white and fluffy clothes, like a sheep. Her Magic deals with using wool attacks to reassure her opponents in combat.
Taurus	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Golden Bull" Taurus is a minotaur with black and white splotched skin, a nose ring and a black speedo, and belt. He wields a giant two-bladed axe.
Gemini	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Angel (former) "The Twins" Two little spirit twins named "Gemi" and "Mini" that can transform into anyone perfectly and replicate both their thoughts and Magic.
Cancer	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Layla Heartfilia (formerly) "The Great Crab" Cancer has a crab-claw hairstyle with six crab legs coming out of his back. He wields a pair of scissors that he uses for attacking and haircuts.
Leo	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Karen Lilica (formerly) Leo "The Lion" appears as a man in a designer suit with his hair in the form of a lion's mane. He uses the Magic Regulus for combat.
Virgo	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Duke Everlue (formerly), Ahatake Kurosaki (formerly) "The Maiden" Virgo has a normal black and white maid outfit, with chained shackles around her wrist. She has the ability to dig holes underground.
Libra	Summoner: Yukino Aguria "The Heavenly Scales" Libra is a young woman in a dancer's outfit who hides her face behind a veil and wears each half of a set of balancing scales on each hand. She has the power to alter gravity.
Scorpio	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia, Angel (former) "The Scorpion" Scorpio is a rough man with a large gun for a tail. Scorpio uses a sand based Magic, which he blasts a great amount of sand from his tail.
Sagittarius	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Archer" Sagittarius is a man wearing a horse costume much to Lucy's surprise with a great skill in archery.
Ophiuchus	Summoner: Yukino Agria "The Snake Charmer" Ophiuchus is a humongous snake-like creature that appears to be part organic and part mechanical in nature.

Andromeda	Summoner:Takeshi Miyamoto "The Chained Princess", Andromeda is a slim young woman wearing pink armor. Has green hair,and pink eyes.
Waevern	Summoner:Dreaded Silver "The Boreal Serpentine", Waevern is an ice white Serpent Dragon, with crimson eyes.
Grimmdark	Summoner:Dreaded Silver "The Unholy Burden", Grimmdark is a humanoid demon-like spirit, with a ceptor.
Ara	Summoner: Mirio Tachibana "The Altar", Ara is a purple skinned and blonde woman with a black lond dress. She has the power to create chains and to cure other people when they feel pain. Ara is selfish and very greed, and can only be summoned in night places.
Ara	Summoner: Ahatake Kurosaki "The Altar", Ara is a short and petite woman with chin length dark green hair and purplish-red eyes, and usually dresses in traditional clothing. She specializes in sword-based magic.
Caelum	Summoner: [[Angel|AnAngel (former) "The Chisel", it appears as more of an item than a being which takes three different forms to attack.

Columba	Summoner: Nuryn Kuroki "The Dove", Columba's personality is similiar to Lepus but the advice she gives is different. She uses Requip.
Crux	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Southern Cross" Crux is a human like cross, with a mustache and cross shaped nose. Crux has a lot of information about all Celestial Spirits and their masters, either in the present or in the past.
Draco	Summoner: Caley Dullahan "The Dragon", Draco uses Sword Magic and possibly Dragon Slayer Magic. She is confident in battle, but is awkward and uncertain.
Eridanus	Summoner: Mirio Tachibana "The River", uses water and ice magic freely, can fly with her wings at a jet speed. She also owners a whip: "Fleuve d'étoiles" or the River of Stars. It's a whip that has the rope section made of water, with stars of different sizes flowing and/or floating around it, and all the "rope" is extending. Eridanus is really authoritarian, angry and bossy, and can only be invoked when near water or in high humidity environments.
Horologium	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Pendulum Clock" Horologium is a large grandfather clock. Horologium has combat and non-combat uses.
Indus	Summoner: Mako Tachibana "The Indian" Indus has an appearance of an indian. She uses wind magic.
Leo Minor	Summoner: Nuryn Kuroki "The Little Lion", Leo Minor is kind,brave and loyal,although he is also a mischievous troublemaker.Like Leo,Leo Minor uses Regulus but his attacks are different and Sword Magic.
Lepus	Summoner: Nuryn Kuroki "The Hare", Lepus uses Transformation and High Speed.Since Lepus is both a loving and gentle person as well as destructive and violence,she earned the tittle of Yandere by The Kuroki Siblings and their close friends.
Lupus	Summoner: Link Scarburst "The Wolf", Lupus is a black wolf with sharp fangs. He's Kind with his master, but he's fierce with his enemies. He have a chain on his right paw, confirming his contracted with his master. He uses Darkness magic.
Musca	Summoner: Hammond Newgear "The Fly" Musca is a small spirit resembling an anthropomorphic fly. Though not physically powerful, he can use poison magic to debilitate opponents,
Lacerta	Summoner: Hammond Newgear "The Lizard" Lacerta is a more physically able Celestial Sprit, resembling a large alligator with a shorter snout. She fights by using her incredible muscle mass to inflict devastating blows and overpower opponents.
Chameleon	Summoner: Hammond Newgear "The Chameleon" Chameleon resembles a humanoid chameleon, standing on it's hind legs. He can become invisible to the naked eye like a real chameleon, and harden his scales to increase the power of his strikes.
Lyra	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Harp" Lyra wears a bonnet and dress. She also has wings on her back, she has the ability to sing beautiful songs, she mostly sings about emotions, but she does take requests.
Nikora	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Canis Minor" Nikora (or Plue, which Lucy named) is a cute, yet small creature. Nikora takes up hardly any Magic power when summoned, stated by Lucy.
Piscis Austrinus	Summoner: Mako Tachibana "The Southern Fish" Piscis Austrinus (often called Austrinus for short) is a big fish that can use Water Magic.
Pyxis	Summoner: Lucy Heartfilia "The Compass" Pyxis looks like a penguin with a big round face. It has a compass on top of its head.
Scutum	Summoner: Mako Tachibana "The Shield" Scutum is a very useful shield that cannot be damaged and broken. Scutum can be used in combat for both offense and defense.

Altair	Summoner: Key is currently lost "The Golden Eagle", Altair appears as a young male spirit who can use light and sun magic, along with wind magic. His other form is a giant golden eagle that allows one person to fit on him.
Vul (Lukida)	Summoner: Rhysand Aviur "The Nine tailed Fox", Lukida's real name is Vul, but she goes by her former. Taking the form of a human with two long fox tails, her true form is that of an abnormally large silky whitish golden fox with nine tails. She performs Star Flame Magic, said to originate from a star itself.
Rotanev	Summoner: Rhysand Aviur "The Tidal Dolphin", Rotanev appears as a human-like spirit with a dolphin on his back and a crown of seashells, pearls, and coral, sits on his head.
Lupus (Crescent)	Summoner:Kallias Levaro "The Giant Wolf", Lupa is also known as Crescent, but her real name is Lupus. Lupa's true form is a giant white wolf with black markings. Her other form looks like a human but has a pair of furry white wolf ears atop her head, and a white long fluffy tail. Lupa can use White light and Dark Shadow magic.
Canis	Summoner:Caamien Levaro "The Hunting Dogs", Canis is an enormous two headed dog with two other forms. Their human form is in the form of an older brother (Sirius) and a younger brother (Procyon). Their other form is of two abnormally large dogs, Sirius being the older one, and Procyon the younger. Procyon uses Wind Magic, Sirius uses Adhara, and they both use Orion.
Monoceros	Summoner:Kallias Levaro "The Silver Unicorn", Monoceros is a dazzling white horse with a silver mane and tail, and a single spiraling horn on its head. It uses Illusion Magic and Light Magic.

Aranea	Summoner: Fried Greyfreir "The Disgraced Spider", Aranea is a centaurian type spirit whose lower body is a gigantic spider abdomen with the ability to project webs
Noctua	Summoner: Fried Greyfreir "The Disgraced Owl", Noctua is an avian spirit with the ability to conceal objects and dispel magic.
Taurus Poniatovii	Summoner: Ramona Watt "The Disgraced Bull", a large bull spirit with the ability to fire magic beams from his mouth.
Rangifer	Summoner: Has eaten her own key "The Disgraced Deer", Rangifer has the ability to assimilate the power of those she eats.

Celestial World

All Celestial Spirits spend their time in the Celestial Spirit World when not called through by their summoners. Being in the World seems to have some sort of rejuvenating effect on the spirits, restoring their health after being in the human world which, over long periods of time, can potentially kill the spirit. The reverse is also possible: humans are unable to breathe in their World so after a period of time, albeit a much shorter one, they would die. Such an occurrence (a human entering the Celestial World) is a serious breach of contract. This rule, however, is not absolute, since Natsu survives an extremely brief period in the Celestial Spirit World when he catches hold of Virgo just as she transits through the spirit world to reappear elsewhere in the human world at Duke Everlue's command.
