Cubare (クバー, Cubaa) is a race found across various worlds. Originating in Tehom thanks to their ancestor, they would spread beyond that plane to neighboring dimensions, curiosity and the occasional spurt of mischief leading them on. Known in Earth Land as "succubi" and "incubi", among other names, they are generally regarded as a menace by most other races, particularly gods, elves, and humans. This has led a number of cubare to build settlements of their own, while the bolder among them blend into the societies of other races.
Overview[]
Terminology[]
While referred to by the exonyms "succubi" and "incubi", among less accurate pejoratives, there are a number of terms used by the race when referring to themselves. Cubare is the general term for the race writ large, regardless of gender or sex; it can also be used to refer to a mixed group of people. Succuba is used to denote a single female, while succubare points to a group of female cubare. Incubo refers to a male, with incubare is used for multiple males. Cubi, meanwhile is a recently invented term for those who don't generally identify with male or female; after all, cubare themselves consider incubare and succubare simply two sides of a coin, with the one they chose dependent on the objective at hand.
While the Cubare language (known as Cubleni) isn't well documented, due to the species often electing to blend in with the societies of other races, a number of familial terms have been recorded, as well as some trends within the language. For example, terms denoting the feminine equivalent of something always end in a, while male equivalents always end in o. Additionally, neutral words use i for the singular. The plural forms of words, whether, masculine, feminine, or neutral, end with an e. Moreover, the letter l is used to reference great, elder, or grand, and is prefixed on words when applied.
Some words found include:
Cui (クイ, lit. "Sibling") or Lcui (ルクイ, lit. "Elder Sibling")
Incuo (インクオ, lit. "Brother")
Incuilo (, lit. "Little/Baby Brother")
Sucua (スクア, lit. "Sister")
Sucila (, lit. "Little/Baby Sister")
Paro (パロ, lit. "Father") or Lparo (ルパロ, lit. "Grandfather")
Paipai (, lit. "Papa, Daddy")
Mara (マラ, lit. "Mother") or Lmara (ルマラ, lit. "Grandmother")
Maimai (, lit. "Mommy, Mama")
Cari (キャリー, lit. "Parent") or Lcari (ルカリ, lit. "Grandparent")
Caicai (, No known equivalent among human languages)
Pacuo (パクオ, lit. "Uncle")
Macua (マクア, lit. "Aunt")
Cacui (カクイ, lit. "Parsib")
Tucare (トゥカー, Tukaa; lit. "Kin-House or House of Kin")
Lenori (レノーリ, Renori; lit. "Soulmate, Burning Love") or Lenore (レノア, Renoa; lit. "Soulmates, Burning Loves") (Word also has masculine and feminine forms)
Ranks[]
As a demonic race, the cubare also possess a number of terms corresponding to the ranks and levels of demons. The first is Vacubi (バクビ, Bakubi; lit. "High One Who Lies"), their equivalent term for archdemon. As with other words, there are gendered variants, including Vasuccuba (ブイスックバ, Buisukkuba; lit. "High One Who Lies Underneath") and Vaincubo (ブインクボ, Buinkubo; lit. "High One Who Lies Upon").
As for devil king, it is commonly ascribed as Cubireyn (クビリーン, Kubiriin; lit. "Ruler Who Lies"). The feminine and masculine equivalents, meanwhile, are: Sucareyna (スカリーナ, Sukariina; lit. "Queen Who Lies Under") and Incoreyno (インコリーノ, Inkoriino; lit. "King Who Lies Upon").
Lastly, devil god is as Cubidei (クビディー, Kubidii; lit. "God Who Lies"), with the gendered forms as Sucadeia (スケーディーア, Sukeedeia; lit. "Goddess Who Lies Under"), and Incodeio (インコーディーオ, Inkoodiio; lit. "God (Male) Who Lies Upon").
These terms are largely paralleled by one offshoot residing in Hiizurukuni. Unlike them, however, the terms appear less gendered. First is Daimuma (, lit. "Great Succubus, Great Incubus"), their equivalent of archdemon and similarly situated cubare terms. Second is Joōmuma (, lit. "Woman King of Succubi") and Ōmuma (, lit. "King of Incubi"). Last is a single term for devil god and the like: Mumajin (, lit. "Succubus Goddess, Incubus God").
Appearance & Physiology[]
Imagine the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. Now imagine other people seeing the most beautiful thing they've ever seen. That's a member of the cubare in a nutshell. While recognized as a demonic race, their true appearance often eludes most. Instead, onlookers and those who cross paths with them are treated to a host of looks; humans, elves, dragons, other demons, dwarves, and merfolk to a name some of their favorite guises. Some have even masqueraded as angels, if only for their own amusement. As some of the best shapeshifters in the cosmos, they generally prove indistinguishable from those they replicate. Indeed, it's fully possible for the best of them to shapeshift down to their very biology; for example, having a fully human child with another human thanks to being human themselves. Even then, an innate charm carries over, translated as a beauty in both parent and child which separates them from "ordinary stock". As one succuba put it, "just because we play as another race doesn't mean we won't be fabulous while doing it".
For the fortunate (or unfortunate) few who have seen the true guises of cubare, they fall along the lines of most demonkind, albeit in an appealing form. Most feature wings, either centered just above the waist or spreading from the middle of their back. A few have more than one set of wings; sometimes as many as three. They feature horns of varying sizes, combined with a luscious figure. Branches found in Tehom tend to forgo clothes entirely, or opt for skimpy, revealing attire which allows them to show off their fitness. In terms of diet, they can subsist on most foods, but do enjoy life force the most, entering the dreams of others as a means of procuring these food/energy source. Some scholars have argued the Leanan sídhe are an offshoot of the cubare, born from successive unions between them and Fae, due to the same food sources and some of the same traits. As immortalized in folklore, one of the cubare's dominant traits is an inherent charm, easily swaying the weak-willed and even the stronger through Norlat (ノーラット, Nooratto; lit. "Lovespeak"). It's an ability which has been weaponized by some to carve out territories of their own, set up worship bases, or play the role of powerbroker or diplomat. Naturally, it's a key reason for their porous rep, seen as "tempters" and "silver-tongued snakes".
