Memento Mori (死神の不吉祝(メメント·モリ), Memento Mori; Latin for "Remembering the Time of One's Own Demise", Japanese for "Grim Reaper's Ominous Celebration") is said to be the most dangerous magic known in the Heroic Chronicles storyline, a rather notable accomplishment considering one of its counterparts is known for its destructive potential — unsurpassed by any others. As one of the two known Black Arts of the group, something it shares with its fellow equivalent, it completely defiles the boundaries of life and death whenever its used — something that goes against the very laws of nature; due to its namesake and capabilities, it's often referred to as the "Embodiment of Death" (死去の具現, Shikyō no Gugen).

Something aforementioned, this magic is part of the Ancient Magics of the Thirteen Otherworldly Virtues — aspects of the Supreme God himself, obviously representing Death (死去, Shikyō); it's a Caster Magic, an Ancient Spell — being older than nearly every other magic outside its group, and counted as a Subspecies Magic — invoking Living Magic and Death Magic simultaneously in order to induce the utmost effectiveness. Out of all its brethren, it's the only one that's have two known users; the first is El-Kaid Gorgun Tartarus, who utilizes it the main source of combat — foregoing the need for Curses. After his apparent death, the magic is passed to Macabrenus Goetion — the infamous "Grim Reaper" of the Alveraz Empire, becoming part of the Death God Triad (冥界の三収獲鎌(デス·ゴッド·トライアド), Desu Goddo Toraiado; lit. "Three Reaping Scythes of the Underworld").

Trivia[]

  • Obviously, this is based on the curse of the same name, created and utilized by the author's favorite canon Etherious. Considering that one of the users of this magic was based off of that Demon, it shouldn't come as a surprise that he's a user of this magic.
  • This magic was later given to the author's rendition of Bradman — another Etherious that the author that the author has come to appreciate; due to his Grim Reaper appearance and his constant boasts about him being "death incarnate", it makes sense that he would be the next user of this magic.
  • This was modeled after the powers of the Royard Clan from the webtoon, Noblesse.
